Texas has left the union and joined the Confderate States of America.  Col.
Prusser is now Captain Prusser of the Navasota Volunteers, Texas.  With us
seceedin, we're needin our own army and navy now.  We're still local
milicia, but now we're part of the Texas military.  A lot of men who were in
the U.S. Army have resigned and are coming home now.  It don't take them
long to git a place in the new armies of the Confederacy.  Some of them like
Robert E. Lee are already famous.  He was decorated for his part in the
Mexican War, and for taking Harper's Ferry back after that murderous John
Brown rebelled and took it over.  Captian Prusser says he expects we'll be
taken into the regular army pretty quick if war comes.  I'm sorta cornfused.
Part of me wants to go and see the elephant, but I also want to stay home
and take care of Elizabeth and Sid.

If we do have to fight the yankees, everyone says it won't last long.  Most
of them won't have no stomach fer fightin like the southrons.  We can out
march, out ride, and out shoot most any of them city boys.  They'll run home
cryin fer momma at the first chance they git.

Sure as God made the world, we'd win a fight because right is on our side.
Thomas Jefferson was against the federal government controllin everythin.
He had the right of it.  Don't no one state have the right to lord it over
another and tell it what to do.  You'd think by now the yankees would have
figured it out.  All of the southern states have pulled out of the union and
don't look like they's goin to come back none to soon unless a lot of things
change.  That's fine by me.  We can make it on our own if we're just left alone.
