Battle of Gettysburg July 1, 1863 Dear Journal, We've arrived at the staging site here at Gettysburg. I've been told that we are to remain in a reserve status until further orders. I suppose this is a good thing for me. I can actually have time to think about things that are close to me. I remember when the war was just a passing thought. There'd never be a war I was told. If they could see me now. Never really did I think that a war between the states was actually possible. I mean it seemed so pleasant here. Everyone going about their business as if there would always be a tomorrow. It's amusing to look at that now. With the war going on for about 3 years now I wonder if life could ever get back to the way it was. Now it seems as if the war will last forever. I hear the Rebs in the distance just a mile away. I wonder what General Lee is doing right now. Probably figuring his next strategy I suppose. I talked to Wilson today and he looked very scared. He's from New Hampshire and we all know the courage they have. But it worried me a little. I've never seen him so rattled before. I see him now over in his tent and he's just sitting there. I wonder if he has been in one to many fights. Who knows? I know I have. Well better be getting some shut-eye. Might be getting into a little scrap tomorrow. Sgt.
