Battle Of Gettysburg, 1863 Dear Journal, I have been told that we are to move to Gettysburg and face Lee on our own soil. It seems so far from my home and my family. I do miss Emily and our conversations. I miss my children Maggie and Sarah. I have not been able to see them in a while. I hope that one day I will be able to see them again. But I suppose that until we win the war I will not be able to hold them in my arms any time soon. I have heard the distant rumble of cannon fire. It shakes me to think that we will be facing the same fire very soon. My commander tells us that we will be in Gettysburg by nightfall. I hope it's sooner, the quicker we get this over with the sooner I go home. Everyone I see seems quiet and worried. I can't blame them. I am also scared. I have to go now the column is beginning to move. I will try to write and account all I see whenever I get the chance. May God be with us tonight. Sgt. James Tucker Army of the Potomac July 1, 1863
