Hello to all of you!!

My name is Harriet Ross Tubman. I was born in 
Bucktown, Maryland, down in Dorchester County.  
I worked on the land of the Ross family. My 
life as a slave was very hard, and I didn't 
like it. So I decided that I would leave 
Bucktown and find a way out for myself.  It 
was hard, I only moved in the night. I had 
heard of some people who would help you leave 
slavery, but it was not an easy trip to make.  
I moved at night looking only at the direction
of the North Star. Now some folks like to call 
those stars the Gourd, but I just call it the 
star.

When I made it to freedom, I could not believe 
how good it was. But-- I was still sad, becuase 
I missed my family.  I tried to get my husband 
to come and join me but he was afraid to come, 
so I had to leave him there. I was not going to 
be a slave anymore!

I went back more than 10 times down to Maryland, 
to get some of my people. Those old slave masters 
got mad at me. They wanted to hire somebody to 
kill me. But they never got to me.  Every time I 
went down to get some more people, they  would 
come hunting me. You see, after moving so much 
over that land, I knew how it was made, and I 
knew the places to hide. They never stopped my 
from getting my people.
