I want to let everyone know that, first of all, I have been very well misunderstood by history. First and last by the southern rebels whom of course were traitors to the United States of America and which I made every effort to punish then for their trangressions. I as you will find out suceeded!!! You as young people may find me to be course and ungiving, but I was also a school teacher, and only did what I thought necessary for my country. I would like to give you a little background about myself and give you a chance to research me a little before I tell you about my war experiences, my "March to the Sea", and my close relationship and letters to U.S. Grant (in my opinion the best general in the war to include Robert E. Lee). I was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio. My father was an Ohio Supreme Court Judge. I graduated from West Point, the U.S. Military Academy, in 1940 at 21. After graduating I went to Florida and served in the Seminole War against the Indians there. In 1846 I went to the Mexican Wars and served with General Kearney. I got out of the Army in 1853 as a Captain and went into business. After four years I was bankrupt and moved to Leavenworth, Kansas to practice Law. In 1850 I became Superintendent of Alexandria Miltary Academy in Louisiana. This school is now the Louisian State University. This is my life before the Civil War. Next I will tell you about myself and family and later will tell you why I am called the first "modern General"!!! William Tecumseh Sherman, General of the Army
