Dear Diary, Well, I finally got to ride on a steamboat! We moved out of camp at full strength on the 10th, and covered the 20 or so miles to Cincinnati in two days. There were steamboats waiting to take us down river. From what I hear, we're bound for Louisville, KY. The Rebs seem to be moving into the southern portion of the state in force, especially down around Bowling Green. Reckon we'll get our chance to save Kentucky for the Union. I wasn't much impressed with Cincinnati - but now I know why they call it "Porkopolis". It's a meat packing town, and I reckon there are more pigs than people! They just let them run loose down by the slaughterhouses. You can imagine the smell! The steamboat ride was exciting! Since we were moving with the current, I reckon we made an easy 10 miles an hour most of the way. No problem with snags, but some with other river traffic. Cincinnati is one of the busiest ports on the Ohio, so it took a bit of dodging to get into the channel. They packed us in so tight, it was hard to find a place to sit, let alone lay down, so I spent most of the trip watching the scenery. We got into Louisville late, so we just marched into camp and bedded down. Maybe I'll get a chance to explore later on.
