March 9, 1862 Washington D.C. My Dear and Beloved Family, I have been quit ill these past few weeks. The illness was called the Yellow Jaundice. My skin turned yellow, and even the whites of my eyes! The Doctor told me it was a result of unsanitary conditions and bad food. I am weak, but otherwise well. In the very early morning we will cross the Potomoc River, and proceed to a place called Burke's Station, in the state of Virginia, and there for the first time, engage the Rebels. I am afraid my family, not for myself only but for all of the men who will face each other. I must close now and try to sleep, but I think that sleep will be very hard to comeby. With Love, Major Robert Farrar 7th Michigan Inf. USA
