March 12, 1862 Burkes Station Virginia My Dear and Beloved Family, Our first battle is at last over. Prior to marching from Washington, we were joined with the Army of the Potomac, 12th Brigade under the command of Brigadier General George Custer. We are the second battalion, and all from Michigan. I am second in command. The fighting went on for three long days and nights. It seemed a never ending fourth of July. The dead and wounded are everwhere. There was no true victory in this encounter, and neither side gave up an inch of ground. If anything, we and the Confederates have gained much mutual respect. We will now be moving toward Richmond. I have not as yet regained my full strength and am not at all sure how much longer I can continue. I must go now. I have many letters to write to the families of those who were killed in this battle. Please stay well, and care for each other. All of my love, Major Robert Farrar
