10th January 1862 Washington My Dearest and Beloved Family, We have arrived here at Washington some two days past. The weather is very harsh and not unlike winter at Saginaw. The men are, for the most part in good health and of high spirit. Our journey from Michigan was very long, taking some four months. The good citizens of states we passed through were kind and accomodating with food and other items. I have had a very bad dream on several occassions now. I dream that we are in the fighting and across the battle field I see Uncle Earl of Kentucky firing his musket at me. I know that our kin who are in the south will be somewhere upon these torn and bleeding fields. I pray that we must not confront each other. I must close for now as the courier is set to ride. Please take care of each other until I can return. I am yours in love and trust, Major Robert W. Farrar 7th Michigan Volunteers P.S. Angelica my grandaughter, you must help in all ways that you can, and please, pray for grandpa.
