While John was sick and in the hospital the 131st was sent to
Fredricksburg, where it was thrown against Marye's Heights in a suicidal
attempt to dislodge the Confederates from that fortress.

we ar in Some hopes of giting paid after new years or the first of January
for they ar going to musterus on the pay role the last of this month  if we
git paid ithink we will git paid for 4 month for we war mustered in the
service on the 14 august  

my riegement was in the fight at fredrics burg and got cut up bad  it took 
about the third man in my company ther was to killed and 16 wounded and ther 
was not more than sixty in the field  the weather is warm like Sumer and ther 
has been but one litle Snow yet and it dont look mutch like Snow yet  

iam at the hospittle yet and idont think that ishal leave ther till Some time 
in January and maby not then the grub is not as good as in the riegement for 
at knight we git nothing but bread and coffee and at noon we git Soup and a 
poor as the living is iam giting fat as a hog and the longer iStay the beter 
ilike it  ther is to hear beside my Self out of the Same company
