March 4, 1861 Today seems strange. Mr. Lincoln was sworn in as the 16th President of the United States. I am the first president of the Confederate States of America. I guess, that no matter what happens, we are making history now. It is a strange feeling. Mr. Alexander Stephens is serving as my Vice-President. He is here now, in Montgomery, helping write our own Constitution. It's been a big fight for those delegates. They are actually using the United States Constitution as their guide. It is very exciting. The powers which will be given to me as President may be far different than those of Mr. Lincoln's. I've been thinking about Abe Lincoln a lot lately. I pity the poor man. If the task in front of us is huge, his is enormous. We are now a Confederacy of 7 states. I believe that Virginia will soon join us, as will Arkansas, North Carolina, and hopefully Tennessee. Virginia is very important. They have some of the greatest military men there - Robert E. Lee, JEB Stuart, and a young man by the name of Thomas Jackson. They will be beneficial if there is to be war.
