September 17, 1862

Dear Diary,
I am fortunate to ba able to write this evening. Today
there came a fight of the most unimaginable magnitude. There were
countless numbers of my comrades lying dead or dying on the field today.
The sight was horrific. I pray that, in the end, all of this slaughter
can somehow be justified. Antietam Creek will always be remembered for
those who made the ultimate sacrifice today. May God rest their souls.
