May 1861, San Diego, California Haven’t had time to write much. Virginia seceded from the union last month as I had feared it would. Guess Turner Ashby is in his glory now for I know he joined up almost immediately. I’ve wrestled with the decision that I have to make for the past month.....to either stay with the army I’ve served for the past 22 years....... or resign my commission and go back to Virginia and join the Confederate Army. It’s been a hard decision to make since my ancestors fought so hard to keep the United States in one piece all these years. But since my State has decided to join the new Confederate Sates of America, with it’s President Jefferson Davis........ it is sure to be invaded by northern troops.....being so close to Washington City and the boundary with Maryland which I have heard has decided to remain neutral. I have decided that I must follow my home State and help defend her and her people from this terrible aggression. I know that I will receive a commission with the Confederacy due to my strong military background. On May 26th I submitted my letter of resignation from the United States Army. I have also requested a leave of absence so I can travel back east while I am awaiting its acceptance. Hopefully it will come through soon. Lew
